If we are going to win the war against suicide, we have to start by providing those who have given so much to us the tools and resources they need. One of the things needed most is a place where those who may be struggling can go to find a stigma-free, non-judgmental environment where they can interact with others going through similar situations. The Angels With Demons Facebook Group is a private, peer support group that provides encouragement through posts, messages and private chat rooms.
Geoff Speyrer is one of our many Angels who battles his Demons on a daily basis. Geoff has worked diligently over the past year to strengthen his mind, his body and his spirit. One of his favourite ways of doing this is training for and participating in Extreme Endurance Events. Through Geoff's participation in these events, he is helping raise both money and awareness for the prevention of military/veteran suicide and is able to support local and national non-profit organizations such as Healing Paws for Warriors and Mission 22. Geoff also currently works on encouraging veterans and civilians to improve their lives through exercise. Learn more about Geoff's story by clicking the link below.
The Perdue/Guinn Memorial Scholarship will be awarded each Fall, beginning Fall 2021, to a student who lost a Military/Veteran/Law Enforcement/First Responder parent to Suicide.
In addition to the Perdue/Guinn Memorial Scholarship, Angels With Demons hopes to provide donations to Veteran Suicide Prevention organizations and award sponsorships to veterans entering athletic events to raise awareness for suicide prevention and possibly award sponsorships to help veterans acquire service and/or emotional support dogs.
A little bit about us, where we come from and what drives us to do what we do.
After losing her brother to suicide in January of 2014, Gigi became an advocate for suicide prevention. She continues to do this as a volunteer with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. But wanting to work more to prevent suicides within some of our most vulnerable communities; veterans, active duty military, law enforcement and first responders, and to be able to provide support to families who had lost loved ones, Angels with Demons was born.
Lonnie has spent his 34+ year career with the USAF. First, defending our great nation and now helping to train the young men and women currently doing so. Along the way, Lonnie has battled his own demons, but works hard every day to keep them down and to help others do the same. Lonnie is a suicide prevention counselor and a military sexual trauma counselor. Whether you need a laugh, a kick in the butt or just some good old motivation, you can count on Lonnie to always be there.
Valerie comes from a military family and has always supported our men and women in uniform. She was a junior auxiliary member of the American Legion while growing up. She is currently a member of Soldier's Angels and has been involved with that program for 9+ years. She enjoys talking with people, helping others and trying to help anyone who is struggling find solutions to their problems. Valerie has stayed up many nights with our members in our chat rooms to ensure that they are safe and that they know they are not alone in their struggles.
Mariah's husband, Adam, proudly served his country in the US Army. After battling PTSD for many years, Adam lost the war with his demons and Mariah lost her life partner and father to her twin boys. She has advocated tirelessly since to be a voice for PTSD support and suicide prevention. Mariah is also a huge advocate for self-care, understanding that if you don't take care of yourself, you won't be able to take care others. Mariah actively supports her local veterans in many ways and keeps in touch with many of her husbands battle buddies.
